World number 76, Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia took down the unseeded Ukrainian contestant, Mariya Koryttseva, in the opening round of the Tashkent Open on Monday afternoon.
It took one hour and thirty two minutes of play for the fourth seed Latvian to wrap up a convincing straight sets victory at 6-0, 7-6(1), to make it to the second round of the tournament in styles.
The contest was stage on the hard courts of the Tashkent Tennis Center, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, with the fourth seeded Sevastova displaying her dominance to clear the opening round of the tournament. It was the 11th
victory for the Latvian in the running WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) and the second consecutive one against Koryttseva in singles encounters. The last time these two players faced each other was in 2007, when Sevastova registered an enthralling three-set
victory against the Ukrainian 0-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the semi-finals of the tournament.
Sevastova was off to a ballistic start in the opening set, completely blowing away her opponent with her incredible power hitting. Koryttseva made a steady comeback in the next set to impose a tie breaker but lost her steam in
the decider to let Sevastova away with a comprehensive victory in the end.
Koryttseva’s errant stroke play and a number of unforced errors, which include nine double faults, wore her out in the contest. The Ukrainian was outdone by the pin-point hitting from the fourth seed Sevastova, who made the most
of her opportunities in the game to come out as the winner.
The Latvian took off the opener with commanding aggression, breaking her opponent in the second game to lead 2-0. She then launched a series of forays upon Koryttseva, breaking her serve three times in a row to seal out the opening
set at 6-0 in the most assertive manner. Sevastova converted 10 of his 13 first serve points in the set and was awarded five double faults from her opponent to get one up in the contest.
Koryttseva made a good comeback in the following set and kept moving with her opponent on even terms. She stung three serve breaks in the set, so did Sevastova, and a tie breaker was imposed when the scores got tied at 6-6. Koryttseva
went through a terrible slump in the decider and secured merely one point to let the fourth seed conclude victory at 7-6(1). Sevastova will take on Valeria Savinykh of Russia in her next matchup for a place in the quarter-finals of the Tashkent Open.
