Anastasiya Vasylyeva topples Nadiya Kolb to reach round two – St. Petersburg ITF 2012
In an all-Ukrainian clash, Anastasiya Vasylyeva crippled her compatriot, Nadiya Kolb, with a breadstick at the St. Petersburg ITF 2012 on Monday. She jolted down a 6-1, 6-2 victory against her fellow citizen to charge into the second round at this ITF (International
Tennis Federation) Women’s Circuit event taking place in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Seeded top in this event, Vasylyeva showed her true colours after entering this indoor carpet event taking place from 24th to 30th December. She required less than an hour to outclass Kolb in their second encounter. The contestants
last met each other at the Antalya ITF last season and after bagging this match, Vasylyeva maintained her winning streak.
Vasylyeva made a convincing entry at the Valeriy Nikiforov Tennis Club. She reeled off the opening four games before Kolb could come on the score sheet. The seed maintained her intensity after that and eventually pulled out the opener with a breadstick.
She fended off three out of four breakpoints she came across and converted three out of six break opportunities to her advantage.
Ranked 324th in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Vasylyeva kept her momentum running towards the following set. She suffered the first blow in the opening game and eventually fell at 0-2. However, the higher ranked Ukrainian
went berserk after that and reeled off six games in a row. She failed to ward off the only breakpoint she came across and cashed three out of six break chances to achieve her goal.
Next up for the top seed is the conqueror of an all-Russian duel between Irina Galimakova and Anastasia Rudakova.
The fourth seed, Yuliya Kalabina, will accompany Vasylyeva in the proceeding round. She devastated the compatriot, Natalia Vikhlyantseva, with a bagel to progress. The seeded Russian winded up last 10 games and eventually sealed the deal with a 6-2, 6-0
score line in almost an hour-long venture. She kept her entire serves with self-assurance and cashed five out of 12 break opportunities to steal the limelight.
Kalabina will square off against her qualifying compatriot, Ivanka Karamalak, who devastated the Belarusian wild card entrant, Anastasia Reshetnikova, with double bagels to advance.
