My ancestors lived in Athol Street in East London in 1901. The street no longer exists. Is there any way I can find out where it was or if it's a name change?

  1. There's a web site called Old London Maps.

Reckon you should have a look there.

  2. FWIW MapQuest has a listing for Athol Square in London:

    Athol Square

    London, E14 0, GB

It's the first street north of East India Dock Rd and just east of Abbott Rd. The addresses run from 1 to 64. Here's a link: http://www.mapquest.co.uk/mq/maps/mapMai...

  3. Try:

There is an Athol square in Poplar which is about as close as you can get now. This has only taken me 2hours to find so you had better enjoy this! http://londonpublichouse.com/MapsofLondo... is also a good source of links for in and around London.

  4. What area is classed as East London. IF you could find out what area it was in then you could contact the Archives Library, for that area. I kept getting  that Poplar was actually  East London,  if you could give the district name then I can find the Archives address for you.

  5. Athol Street was in Poplar near where the East India Docks were. There was a Bus Station in that street up until 1961.

If you would like to know more about the area which your ancestors lived I have given a link to a site which will tell you loads of information about historical life in London, and many links to that area.

  6. I have a 1906 London street map and Athol St. is not listed on it, in fact there are only 8 names beginning with At...

the closest is Atwell St. 3 streets south of Peckham Rye Station.

I've just checked through the street index on my copy of the 1901 London Census and I found Athol Street in Poplar, running into Blair Street, and Athole Street running into

?Benledi? Street. Blair Street is not listed on my 1906 map either, the other name is badly printed and I cannot decipher it properly, it looks like there were possibly name changes pre 1906.
