Can someone tell me where to find family trees without having to pay money? My grandpa is in a nursing home and it would make him really happy to see any military records of him.

Thanks :-)

  1. Unless you put it in your question, we can't tell what country you are in. It is the most frustrating thing Y!A does. Even if you go in through Y!A UK, Y!A Australia, Y!A Canada or ordinary Y!A, all the questions in English go into one big "pot". I'm in California, for instance.

If you are in the USA, for miliraty records, go to

    http://www.archives.gov/

send for the form, have him sign them and send them off. There may be a copying fee.

  2. If you want to send me his name, where he lived when he joined the military, and his year of birth, I'll see if the records are available online and will send them to you. Just go through my profile to send the info. If they're not available online, you'll have to contact the Military Personnel Center of the National Archives in St. Louis MO to get copies of them. The records aren't "free", but they're not expensive, either.

  3. You should start by asking all your living relatives about family history.  Then, armed with that information, you can go to your public library and check to see if it has a genealogy department.  Most do nowadays; also, don't forget to check at community colleges, universities, etc.  Our public library has both www.ancestry.com and www.heritagequest.com free for anyone to use (no library card required).

Another place to check out is any of the Mormon's Family History Centers.  They allow people to search for their family history (and, NO, they don't try to convert you).

A third option is one of the following websites:

    http://www.searchforancestors.com/...

    http://www.censusrecords.net/?o_xid=2739...

    http://www.usgenweb.com/

    http://www.census.gov/

    http://www.rootsweb.com/

    http://www.ukgenweb.com/

    http://www.archives.gov/

    http://www.familysearch.org/

    http://www.accessgenealogy.com/...

    http://www.cyndislist.com/

    http://www.geni.com/

Cyndi's has the most links to genealogy websites, whether ship's passenger lists, ancestors from Africa, ancestors from the Philippines, where ever and whatever.

Of course, you may be successful by googling: "john doe, born 1620, plimouth, massachusetts" as an example.

    Good luck and have fun!

Check out this article on five great free genealogy websites:

    http://www.associatedcontent.com/article...

Then there is the DNA test; if you decide you want to REALLY know where your ancestors came from opt for the DNA test. Besides all the mistakes that officials commonly make, from 10% to 20% of birth certificates list the father wrong; that is, mama was doing the hanky-panky and someone else was the REAL father. That won't show up on the internet or in books; it WILL show up in DNA.

I used www.familytreedna.com which works with the National Geographics Genotype Program.

There are a number of military sites; you can google them or check out Cyndi's, as she has the most links to genealogy sites out there.  The sites are listed by categories, so you should be able to find something under the military sites.

    Good luck!

  4. oh you may go to ancestory.com that may b a very good option i hav one up all ready!!!

    good luck!!    =D

  5. Rootsweb.com

They have lots of free things where you can look up stuff. My mom practically lives online there...*lol* I hope you find what your looking for..I think it's awesome that you are doing that for your Grandfather :)

  6. If you are asking this question from the UK, you could try here,

    http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_reco...

but  they are VERY strict on the criteria for viewing /  obtaining the records, you have to be next of kin, with proof.

  7. Try www.ancestory.com. it's free and it could help ya.

  8. you might be able to go to a courthouse or something to find military records if thats what your looking for but if your looking for a like genealogy like george married sue in 1865 and they had 6 kids or what ever the best free website ive found i www.rootsweb.com though im not 100% sure the info on there is necessarily completely accurate because anyone can post their history on there however, www.ancestory.com is amazing but its also pricey $$ you can look up newpaper articles, imigration records and everything aswell as some pics

  9. There are lots of websites with family trees.

However, whether yours is on the web or not depends on if some family member has put your family tree on the web.

Information in family trees on any website, free or paid, must be viewed as clues not as fact.  There are errors in family trees on the web.  They are subscriber submitted and mostly not documented or poorly documented. Even when you see the same info repeatedly by many different subscribers that is no guarantee it is correct.

A lot of people copy without verifying.  There is no way the people who run those websites can determine what is being submitted is correct or not.  You could make up a bunch of stuff and put it in your family tree and submit it to one of those websites.

Ancestry.Com is not free but your public library might have a subscription to it. They have, I believe, the most records on line.  They have some military records.  Actually while you are at your library you should checkout the genealogy area.

Two good free sites are Rootsweb and FamilySearch.org.

A Family History Center at a Latter Day Saints(Mormon) Church has records on people all over the world, not just Mormons.

In Salt Lake City, they have the world's largest genealogical collection. Their Family History Centers can order microfilm for you to view at a nominal fee.  Just call them or visit their free website at FamilySearch.org to find out their hours for the general public.

I have never had the to try and convert me or send their missionaries by to ring my doorbell.  I haven't heard of them doing that to anyone else that has used their resources.

  10. I'm sure if you google that, you could find it online. Or try going to a local library...preferrably in his home town. They have records that date back a long time. Do some hard copy research for him. In the end, it would be much appreciated by both parties. By the way, it's so sweet that you want to do that for him. Best of luck and spend as much time with him as possible. Don't take ANYTHING for granted. :-)

  11. Military records can be ordered from the govt, but there are fees.

Family trees are a whole different ball game. There are thousands of sites out there with good chances of finding your ancestry.. if you are willing to take time to do the research.

I can only try to say it kindly.. but the expectation of everything free is completely unrealistic. There are many persons here to help point you in the right direction, and even do courtesy lookups. But that is NOT fully doing/researching your entire family history.

    Education is free.

  12. If your grandfather was in the military, you should be able to get copies of his military records. Contact your nearest army base/recruiting office to find out how to go about it.
