Birth time. The issue is I was born in Germany so would I see it online? I don't want to go through the trouble especially since I do not speak German myself to get it. I know it's in the long birth certificate but I don't know how to get it. Also I want to trace someone else's lineage and someone else wants me to find his time of birth as well(Was born in the US). Is it worth the money? Are there free sites where I can do this?

  1. You can not obtain a free copy of a birth certificate on line, unless there is someone who has a copy that's willing to share it with you. Birth records are archived in a state's Bureau of Vital Statistics, sometimes in a county court recorder's office, and sometimes a copy might be found in a person's school records, military service file, driver's license bureau, passport application, ect. The most likely place to find it is in your own family records, photo album or an old shoe box of family records.

Only you can decide if it's worth the money to get a copy. However, if Homeland Security requires a passport to board an airplane or an AMTRAC train, you'll have to have a birth certificate to get a passport. They're not that expensive, and everyone should have one.

  2. No birth record I have ever seen on-line has the birth time. You need the certificate for that  and even then it may not tell you. I just got a copy of my certifcate from the county for $7 and postage, for my passport. It has the time.

Very few on-line sites give birth details of living people. Much of the genealogy data on-line is for Americans.

If you want to trace someone else's lineage and he/she has lots of American lines, Ancestry is the best deal around, IMHO.

  3. You are not going to find something like that online.  Birth certificates are not online at all.  It would be an invasion of your privacy and could lead to identity theft.

There are indexes of birth records on Ancestry.Com and most of them are old records not current.

Actually, in genealogy, it is not considered good ethics to put information about living people on any public forum.

If your friend who was born in the U.S. would contact the hospital medical records where he was born, they might be able to give him the time of his birth.  However, he would, no doubt, have to find out their requirements. They would need something in writing. They just can't give that sort of information on the phone due to HIPAA. No medical records will be online.   He needs to call and find out what forms he needs to fill out.
