Ancestry subscription?

is it worth the money?does it give access to info that you couldnt get elsewhere for free?

Get a pay monthly account so you can see if its worth it for you.you can always upgrade if it is. and no you cant get any of the info for free anywhere else i have tried. The register of Birth deaths and marriages (BMD) has a certain amount but not enough to do a proper search.

My honest opinion is  YES, it's worth every penny I pay for it. I have the world deluxe membership, that means I have access to every document they have registered with them. Its amazing.

Absolutely.  I'm on my second full year's subscription.  For me well worth the money.

Even if you could locate the information on your own, that could take years and a lot more money than a firm with established data bases. Not to mention the hundreds of hours and eye strain headaches. I know, I spent 2 years on and off and even then, had to request some copies that took months to get.

Give the LDS Genealogy Archive a try.Sorry to say they have the biggest and oldest access you can fined.They have been doing it sins the 1840's.

I couldn't have done much of my research in front of a computer from the comfort of my home without it.  Otherwise, I would be doing much, much more of my research the hard way (in church and courts records basements and in cemeteries).

I think Ancestry.Com beats all of the other sites for the amount of records they have.

Now, information in family trees on ANY website,free or paid,  must be viewed as clues not as absolute fact.  They are subscriber submitted and mostly not documented or poorly documented.  Even when you see the same info repeatedly by many different subscribers that is not guarantee at all it is correct. A lot of people copy without verifying.   Actually you can make up a lot of stuff and put it in your family tree and the people who run those websites would have no way at all of knowing. They can't check all that information.

It's worth the price of an "older" edition of Family Tree Maker.  The FTM v. 16 Collector's edition or the FTM 2006 Deluxe both included a 1 yr sub. to Ancestry.  

You can purchase either online for well under $100.  

FTM got smart in 2008 and even their really expensive versions only include 3 mos. of less of Ancestry.  So you'll need to make sure to buy an older version that included the full year.

As long as the software is unused, Ancestry honors the subscription just fine

IF YOU WANT TO DO GENEALOGY IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME:

It is well worth the price.  It would be very difficult to get the same information for free, and it would take you about 100x longer.

IF YOU'RE WILLING TO GIVE UP THAT COMFORT:

Check at your local library.  Most of them give you free access to Ancestry and/or HeritageQuest.  Some even let you get HeritageQuest free at home (with a library card), which is very nice, if all you're looking for is books and US census records.

It was worth it for me, I had a annual membership and I had the opportunity to research both sides of my family in detail.  Family Histories that are documented with two sources per person can be stored in the National Archives, I also purchase the software which allows you to input the details of the family member and perform a search that will allow you to add the details of your choice with footnotes.
