Question:

Ancient European/Germanic languages?

I have been researching and looking for an ancient text/language to get a tattoo in. I am of German descent. I want a quote in fancy script, but I don't want to use a language that means nothing. Using a Germanic language would be a good way to tie heritage into my tattoo.

Do you know of any ancient languages (NOT runes...)

  1. Why not just use German? It's been around for quite a while. You can do some research on early German and find a phrase that works well for you. German script would work well too.

  2. I think something you need to know is that languages have EVOLVED, and there are dialects involved.  If you want fancy script, get german in nice font.  You can get books on the dialects and spellings from longer ago, but you're not going to get a different language all together unless you CHOOSE something different, like... sandscrit.

I suggest looking at some "illuminated texts", they are books with fancy calligraphy, often written by monks.  There you may find the historical font you're looking for, but the language is not going to change much.
