  1. Ancient Greek myth is just what it says "It is a myth" or it is unreal. I believe they told their people about these god's just because it was so magical to them, to keep them in aw and wonder. I kinda wonder if they ever told their people that there really are true God's which are our Father in heaven and His Son Jesus Christ, maybe they never really mentioned it, they just made them believe that there were these other god's that never really existed or were not real. If only they had known the truth, they would not have followed after mythical gods at all.

  2. Because they believed in and worshiped these Gods, and the myths gave them insight into the nature of the universe and the human condition.  Many people to this day find meaning in these myths, not just because they are good stories.  And some people, to this day, believe in and give honor to these Gods.

  3. Ancient Greek myths were told ,about these gods, to the people for the same reason, we have religion today. These stories kept the people under control and it was big business.  Tempels were built in honor of these gods, there were many of them as you know, god of love, war, fertility etc. etc. People would  go to the tempel to worship, leave gifts and money and make sacrifices in the hope that the gods would look favorabely on them!

  4. First, all I have to say is WOW about the first answer.  I am kinda shocked that someone used this question as shameless advertising for Christianity.  At the time of the ancient Greeks, there was no Christianity.  There was Judaism, but those people are going to h**l too, right?

Anyways, to answer the question, the myths about the Greek gods were not myths at the time.  They were the religion of the people in the period.  Any religion from this period that was monotheistic would have been considered a mystery cult.  Although a mystery cult would have offered a more intimate relationship with the divine, polytheism was the most popular religion of the period.  The thought of the ancients at the time was a lot different than now.  The myths gave the gods more human qualities and established a much more different relationship between people and their deities.  For comparison, a modern believer of religion would not bargain with their god; however, an ancient would have promised a sacrifice to a god given a requested outcome of a situation.

  5. As with any religion,Greek mythology was told to answer the questions of the unknown and to enforce human law.

  6. They were told to explain the unexplainable. The myths explained the orgins of the world, the weather, the seas, life and death, and gave some kind of a meaning to life.
