  1. Apparently, they were forerunners of the Sudanese, around 3000 years ago, and were a quite successful civilisation in their day, practising agriculture along the Nile.

  2. More commonly spelled Meroe, this Nile settlement, 200km NE of Khartoum (where the White & Blue Niles merge), and 600km from modern-day southern Egypt, was part of the Kushite Empire, which lasted from 800 BCE- 400 AD. The Meroitic language was spoken in Kush's capital city, Meroe, which is now known as modern-day Sudan. In earlier times, this area had been referred to as Nubia, in general, which included southern Egypt along with northern Sudan...

Meroe was also the famous site, where Alexander the Great (ca.330 BCE) was turned back in his conquest of the world, by Queen Candace of Meroe, who was riding on top of an elephant, while leading a precise military formation at her flanks. He claimed that he turned around only because he didn't want to debate with a woman, however the elephant may have had something to do with it...

  4. Egyptian art shows the Nubians as looking a lot like modern SubSaharan "Bantuoid" Africans with some individuals looking like Nilotics?
