The author says that uncouth may not have had an opposite years ago, but by common usage has developed one -"couth"

  2. 1. showing or having good manners or sophistication; smooth: Sending her flowers would be a very couth thing to do.

    3. unusual or strange.

  3. In my opinion, of course, the word "couth is not a fleeting mood one displays, but a way of life.  You are either couth, or you are uncouth.  So couth does have a antonym, they are just not occupied by the same person.  Hey now! I think that sounded articulate!  Did I spell everything correctly?  Yes!  O.K. There it is then!!
