“And the award of GWAA Player of the Year goes to G-Mac”
Graeme McDowell is on cloud nine after Lady Luck picked up another award for him in the current year.
The Northern Irish star was nominated for the Player of the Year by the Golf Writers Association of America. The 31-year-old veteran won the title without any hassle as his frenzy bore no wrath. The voting took place in Houston and the results of the counting
were announced on Friday evening.
The four-time winner of 2010 was bestowed with two more awards in the same month. He was honoured with Golf Writers Trophy from the British-based Association of Golf Writers and European Tour player of the year by the Tour. However, he is not alone in the
standing as, Martin Kaymer holds equal share on the title.
According to a press release, the U.S. Open champion received 87 votes, whereas, Jim Furyk got 61 and Martin Kaymer bagged 51 votes. Kaymer might have taken the lead in Race to Dubai, but he could not outdo the veteran when it came to public choice.
Graeme McDowell started the current year with a victory at Celtic Manor Wales Open in June and followed it with a triumph at US Open. The victory earned him a 5-year exemption on the PGA Tour and so started his journey on the PGA circuit. Owing to the win,
G-Mac was selected for the Ryder Cup team in which he contributed by a half point that ultimately led to Europe’s victory. Later this year, the Irish won the Andalucía Valderrama Masters on the European Tour and capped the PGA circuit with Chevron World Challenge.
Yani Tseng won the category of female player of the year from the GWAA, whereas, Cristie Kerr and Ai Miyazato came second and third respectively. Moreover, Bernhard Langer was voted as the senior player of the year.
The year has ended, but good news knows no ending in Graeme’s case. The veteran has won the award of Player of the Year by GWAA and has been nominated for BBC personality of the year alongside Lee Westwood. The voting will take place on December 31st
and the way things are going, chances are high in Graeme’s favour.
