And what is of sentimental value to you?

My sister wrote this in 1979 in spiral fashion on a paper plate. It hung on the cottage wall until I brought it home a few weeks ago.

Here is a poem about Tuttle Lake

Everyone knows it's really great!

You can swim and have lots of fun

Or you can just rest

and lay in the sun

You can go fishing

or have a boat ride

because no one likes

to stay inside.

And when it rains

you can still keep busy

and write a poem like this

It really makes you dizzy!

Now, the point of the question:

I talked to her yesterday about things we brought back and suddenly she cried "What about my poem!?" I told her it was one of the first things I put in my "keep" pile.

  1. I have a photograph of my grandfather in army uniform and a large commemorative medal given to the families of those killed in the First World War...yes, I never knew him.  I also have (now) a picture of the graveyard in which he is buried in France....courtesy of the internet.  One day I'd like to go and stand by his grave and tell him how much I would liked to have met him.

  2. Photos, gifts from people I love, odd things connected to a certain memory.

  3. I have my dads coffee cup that he used when I was growing up and I also have the Mandolin that he used to play....it's hanging on my wall. My brothers poems are also important to me.

  4. Letters my sons have sent to me.  Clever, cute and romantic cards...which my husband gives me, quite frequently. Memories of old friends, who have passed.

  5. Above all keepsakes I value the words of someone close or someone from my deep past. To hold them in your hands is to be able to recapture the past and hold time in your hands.

With a photo you capture a moment; with written words you capture thoughts that lie within the journey of one's life.

  6. What a cute poem.

    Poetry makes me dizzy too!

  7. Being sentimental shows you care.  As evident in your placing her poem in the 'keep' file.  She was made to feel special and loved.

  8. I have this Valentine that my parents gave to me when I was about 5 years old. It's a little wrinkled and slightly dirty, but I can never seem to get rid of it.

  9. What to say, I'm a sentimental fool, and a pack rat.

Paper plates are so handy, can't live without them.

  10. I have a book that I put together when I was in the first grade about my family.  I still have it because it was something that my mom and dad were involved in.  We created our own family crest and put it in the book.  I proud of it and it's something I will never get rid of.  that's been 22 years ago.

By the way...it's hard to be a Marines mother....just ask mine.  Semper Fi and good luck to you and yours.

  11. I try to take "memory pics" of people, places, times.

To me, tangible objects are just a touch point (reminder) to what's already in your head and heart.  I don't like to develop attachments to things, I'd rather just carry the memory inside me.

  12. Wow!  What a special memory!

    Only photos from the past

    hold sentiment for me.

  13. here is my answer to your question..

    every breathe

    of my wakened day,

    every dream of

    deepened sleep,

    all the things

    my heart can keep.
