  1. Really depends on which one you're referring to.  Synthroid (thyroid replacement hormone) can cause dramatic changes in metabolism and cause weight loss, however, when used "indiscriminately" (without the supervision of a physician) can be extremely dangerous.

Other medications increase appetite, some suppress appetite, and yet others, we're not even sure why or how they affect body weight, so obviously it's a tough question to answer.

Just about every medication will have some "side effects," which you may or may not have, but when a doctor prescribes such a medication for you, s/he generally does an analysis of whether the benefits of the medication outweigh the potential risks.  So, in short, if a given medication is affecting your weight, talk to your physician and see if perhaps there's an alternative that's equally as effective.  In some cases, an alternative is really not available or not feasible, in which case the alteration in weight is not something which can be bypassed.

(One thing I can promise you is that medications are developed by large companies, not so much by physicians in clinical medicine.  There's no "conspiracy" that exists in developing a medication with the ulterior motive of causing untoward alteration in weight, rest assured.)
