Anders Forsbrand aims his maiden European Seniors Tour victory at the SSE Scottish Senior Open
Swede Anders Forsbrand fired a bogey-free six-under par 66 in the rain-delayed opening round of the SSE Scottish Senior Open at Fairmont St Andrews to take the share of the lead on Friday, August 17, 2012.
The six-time European Tour champion has yet to open his account on the Seniors Tour. He came close to the victory at the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship. However, he only managed to take the second position on the leaderboard.
In addition to that, he also earned a fourth spot at the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open, held last month. Therefore, he is no doubt contending strongly in each of the tournaments that he plays.
According to him, his putter did not work for him early in the season, which was the major shortfall in his performance that could have earned him a victory in the past.
However, he now believes that he can achieve his goal in no time, as he has brought several improvements in his putting technique.
“I’d take that sort of round any day,” he said. “I holed two important putts on the sixth hole and 17 for par. But otherwise it was very solid. The putter has been very poor of late, but it was good today. I’m very pleased.  My long game has been really
good at times this year, I’ve just not holed enough putts to win. I’m getting closer though”.
Forsbrand got off to a good start, as he recorded two birdies before the turn to go two-under par. He turned a good round into great round by sinking another four birdies on the back nine of the course.
Later in the afternoon, Marc Farry also joined him on top of the leaderboard with the help of seven birdies against a lone bogey.
In the meantime, Scotland’s Andrew Oldcorn led the group of compatriots with a five-under par 67.
Oldcorn missed the cut at The Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex at Turnberry three weeks ago. Therefore, he seemed really pleased with his performance, especially after recorded a bogey-free round.
“I’m just so pleased to play a round without a bogey and it’s down to a lot of hard work,” he said. It’s my best round here for miles. I love this course and I think it’s a great design but I’ve just never been able to play it”.
