Anderson Silva’s coach believes a shift to 170 pounds is not fair – UFC News
While UFC officials and fans are waiting for the super-fight between welterweight titlist Georges St-Pierre and middleweight champion Anderson Silva to happen, there are still certain technicalities that might keep the fight from happening. Probably, the
biggest problem would be bringing the two fighters on terms when it comes to shredding or gaining weight.
President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship has already indicated towards a catch weight fight between the two. Georges St-Pierre has already asserted that he will ‘think’ about it and will only fight Silva when he feels suitable. Now, Silva’s coach
has asserted that a shift to 170 pounds for the middleweight champion would be inappropriate.
“It would be a crime for Anderson to try and fight at 77kg. He could maybe make the weight but the physical loss that he would suffer would be too much,” said Silva’s physical conditioning coach.
“We have to respect St. Pierre, who besides being a great fighter is a monster physically. The Canadian would get a considerable conditioning advantage if they fought at welterweight division limits. For me this fight should happen at 80kg, since that would
already be a sacrifice for Anderson.”
He added that it would be Silva’s first shot at such a low weight and they would have prepare a certain strategy to make sure he gives his best.
Georges St-Pierre made his comeback recently against Carlos Condit after almost eighteen months of temporary retirement due to a blown knee. He underwent surgeries and is now back to his game. According to Condit, GSP’s top game is too difficult to finish
and that is what probably Silva’s coach knows too.
Silva’s drop to 170 lbs might take away the Spider’s weight advantage, along with giving GSP an upper hand since he is a champion at welterweight. Silva, who not only stands as the middleweight champion but is also an unbeaten UFC fighter, is hoping for
a fight against GSP, believing that the French-Canadian fighter is the only man to stand up tough against him.
If the super-fight happens, it will be at catch weight, but what would be the weight limit be?
