Andino, Young and Parkinson prevail in their Round 3 heats at Volcom Fiji Pro – Surfing news
America’s Kolohe Andino, his compatriot Nat Young and Australia’s Joel Parkinson successfully held their own in their respective Round 3 heats at the Volcom Fiji Pro, the latest stop on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship
Tour, which continued at the main event venue of Cloudbreak in Tavarua, Fiji, on Tuesday, June 11, 2013.
All three surfers consequently advanced through into the fourth round, while removing their rivals from the contention for the event title in the process.
The latest day of the competition saw perfect six-to-eight foot waves gracing the main event site, thus setting up a nice and exciting stage for the world’s top surfers to continue their battle for survival.
Andino found himself pitted against the exciting and extremely talent young Australian surfer Julian Wilson in the 10th heat of Round 3.
It turned out to be a pretty low-scoring affair, with both the surfers struggling to adapt to the barrelling conditions that were on offer.
Where Wilson only managed to get to a heat-total of 6.00 points after scoring a 3.50 and 2.50 off his top-two waves, Andino managed to seal the fate of the battle in his favour after posting a 4.83 and 4.17 on the score-board to register a heat-total of
9.00 points.
The next heat saw Young going head-to-head against Australia’s Matt Wilkinson.
The young American surfer looked quite impressive form the onset of the heat and did not take too look to stamp his authority over his rival with an exquisite 8.50-point ride.
Adding an additional 7.17 points to his account, Young moved to a challenging heat-total of 15.67 points.
Wilkinson got off to an impressive start, earning a 7.83 off his first business-wave, but he failed to back it up with the required score. He ended up finishing with a heat-total of 12.93 points, which forced him to surrender victory and thus the Round 4
spot to his rival.
The final heat of Round 3 took place between Parkinson, reigning ASP World Champion, and Australia’s Yadin Nicol, who was responsible for creating the biggest upset of the event so far, elimination of Brazil’s Adriano de Souza from the competition.
Nicol may have been in a threatening form, but Parkinson made him look pretty ordinary after putting on a performance that left the crowd and judges in awe.
The experienced elite tour campaigner opened his account with a near-perfect 9.73-point ride and went on to back it up with a 9.00-point ride, thus finishing with an intimidating heat-total of 18.20 points.
Nicol succumbed to the challenge of beating such a big score and only managed to get to a heat-total of 14.40 points, which included a 7.43 and 6.97-point ride. As a result, he found himself eliminated from the competition.
