Andre Begemann defeats Greg Zemlja to enter quarterfinals – Loughborough Challenger 2011
The second round matches of the men’s singles competition at the 2011 AEGON Loughborough Challenger contested on November 10, 2011 featured Greg Zemlja (Slovenia) play against Andre Begemann (Germany). Begemann won the match 7-6(6), 6-4.
As the first set progressed, both players were going strong with their service games and not giving their opponents the chance to lead into the set. Zemlja, ranked at 124th spot in the world, delivered five aces with double faults twice in the set. Begemann, ranked at 230th place, scored three aces but his serves were on the spot, as he did not concede any double fault.
The first serve winning ratio of both the players was also nearly equal, as Zemlja had a 69% winning ratio while Begemann secured a 63% winning rate.
Both players did great with their first serves as their success rate was at the higher side. Zemlja won 81% points from his first serve.
Begemann was not far behind as he won 80% points from his first serve. In terms of winning points from second serve, Zemlja was not successful as he could win only 50% points from his second serve. On the other hand, Begemann was able to win 67% of his points from second serve.
The two players were equally consistent in scoring points on their service games and did not let their opponents in breaking any of their service games. As none of the two players went on the back foot, the first set entered into a tiebreaker. Begemann won the first set 7-6(6).
With the second set in progress, Zemlja seemed to be in control to tie the match. He scored four aces but his aggressiveness in the second forced him to concede double faults twice.
Begemann, on the other hand, was going smoothly with his own natural pace. He scored a single ace and conceded a double fault once into the set.
Zemlja had a 66% first serve winning rate while Begemann had a slightly higher ratio with 69%. Begemann was again playing a decent run with his serves as he won 85% points with his first serve and 44% points from his second serve. Zemlja won 74% points from his first serve and 40% points from his second.
The Slovenian could save two out of his three breakpoints while Begemann was able to save all three of his breakpoints and sustained his lead.
Zemlja won four games in the second set but he could not move any further as he faced resistance from Begemann. The German won the second set 6-4 and cruised into the next round of the competition.
