Andre Berto vs. Victor Ortiz finally off the cards due to Berto’s injury – Boxing news
Berto suffered an arm injury while training for his mega fight with opponent Ortiz on Monday due to which the fight has been called off for now.
The fight which was scheduled for February 11, 2012, was to be held in Las Vegas but now it will not.
The rivalry between both the greats started when Ortiz defeated Berto through a unanimous decision in April 2011 winning the WBC title. Since then it was Berto’s priority to get his titles back. In fact, Berto even gave up his current title to have a rematch
with Ortiz but now it seems like all his sacrifice resulted for nothing. If he had not chosen Ortiz, he would have had to defend his title against Randal Bailey.
Since both the fighters are considered among the best in the business, this match was a real high-profile one which was being considered the best 2012 will offer. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait a bit more to see both the titans in the ring again.
Announcing the sad news, Berto’s strength and conditioning Coach Victor Conte said, “Andre ruptured the same left bicep that he had surgery on previously. It's my understanding that he hurt it throwing a short left hook to the head during sparring. Andre
is having surgery and I was told that the fight is definitely off.”
Berto, who has 28 wins, 1 loss and 22 knockouts in his portfolio, was reluctant to have this rematch as soon as possible. He has waited for more than a year to get back what he thinks belongs to him and that is the title.
However, time has proven Berto unlucky to be the champ. If this match had happened, Berto would have been able to snatch back the title but the chance is there no more. No future dates have been announced yet and both the sides will look into the matter.
Who knows maybe Berto will not even recover for sometime while Ortiz will move on with his reign without even thinking of giving Berto the opportunity to claim back his lost titles.
