Andre Brasil pockets Men’s 50m freestyle gold – 2012 Paralympic Games
Andre Brasil of Brazil pocketed gold medal of the Men’s 50m freestyle in S10 category on day two of the swimming events at the 2012 London Paralympic Games in Aquatics Centre on Friday, August 31.
The Brazilian swimmer stifled hopes of his opponents with his unstoppable efforts in the single lap freestyle event. With his quickest dive, Brasil gained a comfortable lead over his opponents and earned his way to the top for gold medal.
He spoiled the party of his challengers by capturing gold medal of the event in a world record time of 23.16 seconds.
The champion was followed by Nathan Stein of Canada, who remained 0.42 seconds apart and occupied silver medal of the race by producing a time of 23.58 seconds.
Third position of the race was secured by Andrew Pasterfield of Australia, who remained 0.31 seconds apart and emerged on the finishing blockade by submitting a time of 23.89 seconds.
The Australian swimmer was traced by Phelipe Andrews Melo Rodrigues of Brazil, who stayed only 0.10 seconds away from securing his spot on the podium and ended fourth in the event by reporting a time of 23.99 seconds.
Fifth fastest spot of the race was secured by Dmitry Grigorev of Russia, who stayed 0.62 seconds slower from upsetting his former finisher and hit the wall with an effort of 24.61 seconds.
Subsequently, Ian Jaryd Silverman of USA outperformed his following swimmers for sixth position of the event as he stayed 0.04 seconds slower and posted a time of 24.65 seconds.
Silverman was chased by Furong Lin of China, who was 0.21 seconds slower and clocked an effort of 24.86 seconds for seventh position.
Lin was followed by Justin Zook of USA, who failed to upset any of his opponents and ended his race in eighth place. Zook remained 1.15 seconds slower from his former finisher and tapped the wall with an effort of 26.00 seconds.
Brasil was delighted with his laudable efforts in the 50m discipline and aroused expectations of his supporters by saying that he would work harder to defend his title at the forthcoming tournaments.
