Andre Ghem downs Andrei Gorban to advance into the main draw – Poznan Porsche Open 2011
Qualifying third seeded Brazilian Andre Ghem earned a 6-4, 5-0 retirement victory against Moldova’s Andrei Gorban to advance into the main draw of the Porsche Open 2011, an ATP Challenger Tour event held in Poznan, Poland on Sunday.
Ranked 308th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, Ghem took one hour and nineteen minutes to down the Moldovan, ranked 480 places below him, to advance into the main draw. He was leading 6-4, 5-0 when
the 27-year-old Moldovan was forced to retired due to severe pain.
29-year-old Brazilian thundered into the opening set as he quickly held on to his entire serves and founded ten breakpoint opportunities. He eventually succeeded in converting one to his advantage to clinch the opener with a 6-4
win. Ghem produced a lower first serve share but covered it up by registering an impressive 87 percent win on it. He also took full advantage of the several unforced errors and four double faults the Moldovan committed.
Ghem went berserk in the final set as he unleashed a flurry of groundstrokes to reel off first five games in a row before Gorban got injured. The Moldovan suffered severe pain and after few minutes, he was forced to retire. As
a result, the Brazilian automatically advanced into the main draw.
The Porto Alegre native, Ghem will next face French Vincent Millot in the first round of this event.
Qualifying fourth seed Nicolas Renavand will be joining the Brazilian in the main draw. He bounced back to win against Polish Grzegorz Panfil on his home soil.
Panfil saved the only breakpoint faced and capitalised on one out of three breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to win the opener with a 6-4 win.
The Frenchman re-focused in the second set and took revenge with similar stats. He saved the only breakpoint conceded and cashed in one out of three breakpoint opportunities to his advantage. Renavand eventually sealed the equaliser
by winning six games to four.
In the decider, both stars put up a solid display of tennis and displayed their amazing skills and abilities to exchange two breaks. The set was dragged to a tie-breaker where the seeded Frenchman prevailed to pocket the final
set with a 7-6(4) win.
Overall, Renavand produced a slightly higher first serve share of 78 percent as opposed to Pol’s 75 percent but registered a superb 69 percent win on it. He also committed fewer double faults and put the cherry on the set by slamming
six powerful aces.
Up next for the Frenchman is the eight seeded Czech Jaroslav Pospisil.
