Andre Marteen storms into quarter-final of Indonesia International Challenge – Badminton News
Andre Marteen, a spirited player from Indonesia, continued showing up his inspiring skills and reached into Men’s Singles quarter-final at the Prim-A Indonesia International Challenge 2013, which is being played in Surabaya.
In the round-of-16 clash, the lower ranked Marteen cheered his home fans by showing exit to the second seeded, Chan Yan Kit of Hong Kong, on Thursday, July 4.
The in-form Marteen, who participated in this championship as a 15th seeded player, turned into a potential contender as he secured his berth in Men’s Singles quarter-final in an impressive fashion in 45 minutes.
He played flawlessly and showed a greater level of courage in executing difficult shots, which increased his confidence and enabled him to overpower his experienced opponent in straight sets with a margin of 22-20 and 21-13.
On the other hand, the higher ranked Chan Yan failed to find a good flow and remained struggling to get the bird early. He gave a good fight but not enough to avoid a straight-set defeat from the hands of his local challenger.
Marteen started his journey in the pre-quarter-final battle as an underdog but he had the support of a huge Indonesian crowd that kept on increasing the confidence of their hero.
Indonesian shuttler played to his best potential and he did not let his higher ranked opponent to set up even a small lead at any stage until the end of opening half.
After the one-minute interval, both men did not miss any chance to end up rallies and reached at 20-20. At this crucial stage, Marteen stayed focused and aggressive that helped him in winning the set with a dramatic score of 22-20.
In the second game, the lofty Indonesian was everywhere on court and he was quick in finding gaps. He easily managed a comfortable lead against Chan Yan until the mid-game break.
After the interval, Marteen remained consistent in his flawless play. He executed smashes and fast drops on the right time and stretched the lead easily.
In the ending points, Marteen did not let Chan Yan to narrow the gap and wrapped up the set with a stunning, 21-13 score on the board.
