The Bayer Leverkusen attacker believes that his team is out of contention of making it into the last eight of the UEFA Champions League.
Andre Schurrle reckons that Bayer Leverkusen should admit that they are out of the UEFA Champions League race after falling behind at home to defending champions, Barcelona. Werkself hosted the Catalonians on Tuesday, February
14, at the BayArena for the first-leg of the knock-out stage encounter.
The home side were solid during most part of the first period before being punished by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alexis-Sánchez-c4979 in the 41st minute.
Leverkusen did come back through Michal Kadlec’s goal after the interval but immediately fell behind again through Sanchez’s second strike three minutes later.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lionel-Messi-c22296 closed doors on the hosts with his 88th minute strike as Barcelona earned themselves a crucial 3-1 advantage prior to going into the second-leg at Camp Nou.
Schurrle opined that his team showed a spirited display against the reigning champions but could not cope with the constant attacking threat from the opposition.
While talking to reporters after the game, the 21-year-old further added:
"Perhaps our build-up play wasn't good enough, and then it's difficult to be dangerous in front of goal. Defensively, though, we were good.”
However, Sanchez believes that had Leverkusen showed a bit more character after scoring the equaliser, the outcome could have been different. He feels that the German outfit could still have fancied their chances of reaching the
quarter-finals if the match ended in a draw.
"With a little more courage, like we showed in the second half, we would have had more opportunities, and with a touch more luck one would have gone in and it would have been a draw, Schurrle added.
The German international reckons that it is already a lost cause for his side as there is no chance that Leverkusen will out score Barcelona at the Camp Nou, and make it to the last eight. "I don't think we can go all out in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604,
though, as they'll simply outplay us and we'll concede even more goals," he concluded.
Both Leverkusen and Barcelona will compete in the second-leg of their encounter on Wednesday, March 7. Werkself will have to record at least a three-goal victory at the Camp Nou in order to progress further in the competition.
