Andre Silva, Messias Felix and Garrett Parkes prevail in Round 1 at San Miguel Pro Zarautz
Brazil’s Andre Silva, his fellow countryperson Messias Felix and Australia’s Garrett Parkes made the Round 2 (Round of 96) cut at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz following their impressive win in their respective
Round 1 (Round of 144) heats that went down at Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Tuesday, August 28.
Brazil’s Ruda Carvalho, Australia’s Teale Vanner and America’s Jeffrey Lukasik qualified for the second round as well after claiming second-place finish in their respective Round 1 heats.
With some of the most exciting talent from around the world converging to Zarautz to prove their mettle and compete for the coveted prize purse on offer, a heavy dose of thrilling action was definitely in store for the fans of the sport.
The seventh heat saw Silva square-off with his compatriot Carvalho, France’s Tristan Guilbaud and his fellow countryperson Romain Laulhe in a four-man battle for the Round 2 spot.
Silva did not waste any time and got right down to business, scoring a 7.17 off his first business-wave and immediately backed it up with a 5.67-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 12.84 points. The score held up until the end to see him through to
victory.
Carvalho confirmed his place in the second round as well after finishing in second place with a heat-total of 11.90 points, which comprised of a 5.40 and 6.50-point wave.
Guilbaud and Laulhe failed to survive the day after finishing with a heat-total of 9.50 and 7.53 points respectively.
The next heat saw Parkes get the better of his compatriot Vanner, Portugal’s Filipe Jervis and Japan’s Nobuyuki Osawa. The Australian surfer got off to an energetic start, posting a 5.50 on the score-board early in the heat and went on to back it up with
an additional 5.23-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 10.73 points.
Vanner accompanied his countryperson into the next round after finishing with a heat-total of 9.90 points, which included a 4.10 and 5.80-point ride.
Jervis finished in third place with a heat-total of 8.40 points, while Osawa finished behind him in fourth place with a two-wave total of 7.50 points.
Felix got the better of Lukasik, Spain’s Igor Muniain and Mexico’s Diego Cadena in the ninth heat to secure his place in the second heat.
The 26-year-old Brazilian surfer put on an impressive performance, earning an 8.00 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with an additional 7.80-point ride.
Lukasik successfully extended his life in the competition as well after finishing with a heat-total of 13.06 points, which comprised of a couple of scores in the six-point range.
Muniain finished in third place with a heat-total of 11.84 points, while Cadena had to settle for fourth place after registering a two-wave total of 9.90 points. Both the surfers consequently got eliminated from the competition.
