The Boxing Day clash against the London rivals brought Torres’ goal drought to ten matches as the mighty Blues stumbled to a 1-1 draw. However, Villas-Boas defended his decision to bring in Torres who set up Juan Mata’s lone goal for the hosts.
Villas-Boas said while speaking to reporters:
“We decided to bring http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-c13609 in. He's been working well and he had an impact in the game.
He worked well for the team, assisted Mata for his goal, and showed the level of commitment he has shown in training.”
According to the Portuguese manager, Torres had done well in training and had earned his place in the starting XI for the Fulham game. Villas-Boas failed to mention that he was preparing Torres for Didier Drogba’s departure for the African Cup of Nations.
With the Ivory Coast international gone for the better part of January and February, depending upon his team’s performance in the competition, the Blues will not have a senior striker to rely on. With http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nicolas-Anelka-c27786 set to leave, Torres will be the only
striker left to lead the London side.
Even though http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011 international can help the
Blues back into the title race.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 boss was adamant the Spaniard did not have to score goals to be a good striker and that his assists were as useful to Chelsea. Villas-Boas felt that as long as Torres was making an impact, he deserved a place in the squad.
He revealed:
“We don't judge our strikers on the score. We are one of the most attacking teams in the country. We have a lot of goals spread out among the team.
What is important is that they make an impact. That is what we expect from them.”
