Andre Villas-Boas exited Porto due to fears of being compared to Jose Mourinho – Pinto da Costa
The Porto president has claimed that former coach Andre Villas-Boas was suffering from a ‘Mourinho Complex’ and parted ways with the club earlier than expected to avoid comparisons between him and his mentor.
The 33-year-old masterminded the annexation on the UEFA Europa League, Portuguese Primeira Liga, Portuguese Super Cup and Portuguese Cup last season and hauled the club to an unprecedented quadruple.
He gained victories in nearly all the competitions the Portistas entered, drawing comparisons with him and Jose Mourinho. The media even labelled him the ‘New Special One’, a title which Mourinho had been credited to since his days at http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786.
Villas-Boas also followed in his guru’s footsteps and engineered a switch to Stamford Bridge after his €15 million buyout clause was triggered by the London giants.
The Porto president Pinto da Costa attributed Villas-Boas’ move to fear that he will not be able to live up to the expectations surrounding him as Mourinho’s successor.
"He has a complex and he is always thinking about the ghost of Mourinho. As Mourinho won the Uefa Cup and the Champions League [with Porto], he didn’t want to carry on because he was afraid of not winning the same," said the Porto superemo.
"He was scared of the comparisons with Mourinho and he left."
Da Costa also revealed that in a conversation with Villas-Boas, the manager said that he was frightened that if he lost the UEFA Super Cup to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604, he would be ridiculed and unwanted at the club.
“If we concede three or four goals against Barcelona and if I go wrong in the Champions League [with Porto], nobody will want me there.” The tactician had reportedly said.
The Estadio do Dragao official also said that he was certain that Villas-Boas would exit the club despite his reassurances that he will carry on as head coach. the former Academica manager would indeed go to Chelsea.
After a long and protracted saga, Villas-Boas returned to the Blues once more, as he had already had a stint at the club under Mourinho. The Portuguese coach will now look to take the under-achieving Londoners to Champions League glory.
