Andre Villas-Boas expects Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge to receive England call-up
Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas revealed he was somewhat surprised striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 squad if he
managed to retain his form for the Blues.
Despite having to face competition from the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Romelu-Lukaku-c31672 at Stamford Bridge, Sturridge has already scored four goals this season. In six appearances, the English striker has four
goals and a single assist to his name.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabio-c13152 Capello’s decision regarding Sturridge, but felt it strange that the Blues striker was not included in the team by the Italian manager.
Villas-Boas said while speaking to reporters:
“I don't want to influence any kind of decision but, eventually, any English player who is performing can get a call-up for the national team.”
Despite being young, Sturridge has more than proved that he has what it takes to play top level football, after which Villas-Boas felt he deserved a place on the national team for the upcoming 2012 Euro. The fact that Sturridge had already been pre-selected
gave Villas-Boas confidence the youngsters time was near.
He revealed:
“He was pre-selected, eventually he was not selected for the final squad, but that means that he is close and that it can happen for him.”
It was Sturridge’s improvement over the past season that caused the Portuguese manager to keep the striker at the Bridge past the summer transfer window. Sturridge spent the latter part of last season on loan to Bolton Wanderers, where he emerged as a top
striker.
While at the Reebok Stadium, Sturridge made a total of 12 appearances for the Trotters and went on to score eight goals. The impressive goal tally saw him return to the London club and make his place in not only the squad but the first team as well.
Villas-Boas continued:
"I think we always wanted to see him, and that's why we decided to bring him back to our training camp and assess him and make the wise decision."
With the title-race warming up and proving to be tougher than the previous season’s, Villas-Boas will need all the help he can get from his strike-force. The 34-year-old manager revealed the English Premier League remained unpredictable, which is why his
side had to remain consistent.
The Portuguese manager continued:
“It's match day eight and still a lot of things can happen. We are near; we are not far away in terms of goal scoring.”
The likes of Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have now emerged as top four sides, challenging Manchester United, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 for the top four places. Despite the season having just begun, the Blues will have to remain vigilant as
to not drop any points early on.
