Andrea Arnaboldi beats David Goffin 7-5, 6-1
World number 261 Andrea Arnaboldi of Italy prevailed over world number 207 David Goffin of Belgium in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinals at the Trani Cup in Italy on Friday. The Italian took an hour and 33 minutes to oust his opponent.
Arnaboldi and Goffin exchanged a couple of breaks of serve in the first six games to square off the score at 3-3. The Italian broke Goffin again in the eleventh game and claimed the set 7-5. The left-handed kept his first serve percentage at 63 percent and fired a single ace in the opening set. The Cantu resident saved six of the eight break points he faced and converted the three break points he received in the first set.
The Italian thrashed Goffin in the second set as he allowed the Belgian to grab only one game, breaking him three times to claim the set 6-1. Arnaboldi fired two aces, capturing eight of the ten first service points and four of the six second service points. The 23-year-old responded well to his opponent’s serves, clinching eleven of the twenty first return points in the second set.
Arnaboldi will meet third seed Steve Darcis of Belgium in the semi-finals.
Leonardo Mayer defeats Matteo Trevisan 6-4, 6-2
World number 156 Leonardo Mayer of Argentina dismissed Italian wild card entrant Matteo Trevisan in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 to reach the last four. The match lasted for an hour and 32 minutes.
The Argentinean broke Trevisan in the first game of the opening set and held his next service game to take a 2-0 lead. Mayer maintained his lead throughout the set and grabbed it 6-4. The 24-year-old kept his first serve percentage at 54 percent, sealing eleven of the fourteen first service points and nine of the twelve second service points in the first set.
With winning momentum on his side, Mayer broke the Italian in the third and fifth game, holding all of his own service games to race to a 5-1 lead. The Argentinean served out the set at 5-2. The six feet and two inches tall fired 71 percent of the first serves and five aces in the second set. Mayer won eight of the sixteen first service points and capitalised on two of the six break point opportunities he created on Trevisan’s serve in the second set.
The Argentinean is slated to face top seed Rui Machado of Portugal in the semi-finals.
