Andrea Guardini keen on winning Giro stages
Andrea Guardini of Team of Farnese Vini-Selle Italia is having a tough Giro d’Italia 2012 but the cyclist is determined to improve his performance in the coming stages of the race.
The Italian currently holds the 182nd overall position after the stage 12 classifications and is at the fifth last position at the race.
He is currently 2 minutes and 8 seconds behind the race leader Joaquim Rodriguez and noted that he has learnt a number of things during the first Grand Tour race of the season.
Rodriguez is holding the top overall spot with a healthy lead of 17 seconds over Ryder Hesjedal of Team Garmin-Barracuda.
Sandy Casar of Team FDJ-Big Mat is further 9 seconds behind at the third position with Paolo Tiralongo of Team Astana and Ivan Santaromita of Team BMC holding the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
Andrea had a terrific Tour de Langkawi and secured stages at the Malaysian race. He bagged a record number of seven stages during the event.
The cyclist succeeded during the first, the second, the third, the fourth, the eighth, the ninth and the tenth stages of the contest and also succeeded during the point’s classifications of the race.
While commenting on his Giro’s performance, Andrea told Cyclingnews, “I was a bit unlucky at the start of the Giro in Denmark because the crashes in the stages there held me up,”
“Then the other three sprint stages turned out to be more difficult than anticipated”.
“The long stages and especially the ones with tough finales like at Montecatini Terme and Fano have been hard. I’m still struggling with those to be honest,” he concluded.
“Yesterday’s stage seemed more like a classic than a regular day in a stage race, but I realise that these are the races that count and I’m happy to gain the experience,” he concluded.
The 22-year-old is keen to fill his bag with at least one stage victory at the first Grand Tour race of the season and is now eyeing the sprint stages of the race towards the end of the Giro d’Italia 2012.
Only time will tell of Guardini finds the right winning momentum for the coming stages of the Giro d’ Italia 2012.
