Andrea Guardini sets a new record of winning the maximum number of stages at the Le Tour de Langkawi 2012
Andrea Guardini set a new record at the Le Tour de Langkawi after his stage ten victory at the race.
He overcame Graeme Brown of Australia, who secured a total number of nine stages during the 2002, 2003 and 2005 versions of the race.
Guardini now holds the honour of winning the maximum number of 11 stages in the 2011 and 2012 editions of the Malaysian race.
He claimed a total number of five stages (1, 2, 6, 7, and 10) in the past season and took his performance to the next level this year.
The Italian set the bar even higher by claiming six stages of the race during the 17th version of the event to set the record.
He also grabbed the Points classifications that earned him the blue jersey after the final general classifications. The 22-year-old was overwhelmed with the victory.
“Le Tour de Langkawi is special to me because that’s where I started my pro career last year and I won straight away. It’s also where I’ve started winning this year,” Andrea stated.
Guardini now also holds the honour of winning six stages of the race in the same year.
The 22-year old started his 2012 pursuit during the Australian race, Santos Tour Down Under but failed to grab any stage victories.
He also participated in the Tour of Qatar and the Tour of Oman but struggled to adjust with the warm racing conditions of the Asian continent.
He dedicated his fifth stage win to the CEO of his sponsor Farnese Vini, Valentino Sciotti, who followed the race along with Stefano Giuliani, the team’s Sports Director.
Andrea noted, “He’s got a great passion for cycling and he makes a lot of sacrifices for us to ride, it’s the right time for me to thank him”.
He joined the UCI professional continental side, Team Farnese Vini-Neri Sottoli in 2011 and is continuing his second consecutive season with the side.
The Italian is now all set to make his World Tour debut during the Giro d’ Italia 2012, scheduled from May 5-27, 2012.
Only time will tell if Guardini can continue his winning momentum for the remaining part of the 2012 season.
