Andrea Hlavackova dumps Sania Mirza in the second qualifier – AEGON International 2012
Seeded at number seven in the qualifying draw, Czech Republic’s Andrea Hlavackova routines through the Indian tennis ace, Sania Mirza, to reach the qualifying competition of the AEGON International on Sunday. The 25-year-old Czech
took just 70 minutes to settle the clash in twin-sets, 6-3, 6-3, to get a step closer to the main draw.
Being a part of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) grass-court swing, the contest was played at the Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club in Eastbourne, United Kingdom, with Mirza getting another hard thrashing from a superior-ranked
opponent. Her dismal form of the season continued on the grass courts of Eastbourne as well and she could barely win six games in the entire matchup before succumbing in the second set. It was the first ever matchup between these two players and 92nd
ranked Hlavackova took no time at all to get under the skin of the Indian opponent. She cruised through the both sets with commanding ease and needs just one more win to enter the main rounds of the star-studded event.
Hlavackova delivered 64 percent of her first serve on target, clinching 26 out of 44 points on it, whilst Mirza secured 20 out of her 29 points in the contest. The Czech crafted a total of six break points in the entire matchup
and converted five of them en route to victory. Her opponent could come up with just two out of six serve breaks to finish on the losing side in the end.
The seventh seeded Czech needs to surpass the unseeded Canadian contender, Stephanie Dubois, in her next encounter to make a place in the main draw of the tournament. Dubois registered a huge upset in the second round qualifier,
as she outsmarted the second seeded Georgian opponent, Anna Tatishvili, in a gruelling three-set matchup, finishing the final scores at 4-6, 7-5, 6-1,
Fourth seeded Russian, Elena Vesnina also made her way to the qualifying competition, after dumping the Brit contender, Johanna Konta in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Vesnina will face the unseeded Croatian, Mirjana Lucic, who defeated
Mariana Duque-Marino of Colombia, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round qualies.
