Andrea Petkovic and her 2010 Performance
Andrea Petkovic is a 23 year old professional tennis player from Germany, with a current WTA ranking of World Number 35. Petkovic is a right handed player with a two handed backhand, and a consistent style of play which results in her opponents coming undone
during the match, while she maintains her standard manner of gameplay.
Petkovic turned pro in the year 2006, after which she has claimed one WTA title and 8 ITF trophies. Her singles records are 204 victories to 128 losses, and a career high ranking of World Number 33.
2010 has been an eventful year for Petkovic, with accomplishments such as reaching the WTA top 50 for the first time, and her highest career ranking yet. She began the year with the Brisbane International in January, defeating Iveta Benesova, Vania King
and fourth seed Daniela Hantuchova in the quarterfinals to make it to the semis, where she fell to Kim Clijsters in straight sets. It was after this tournament that her ranking rose to the top 50.
In her third tournament of the year, the Open GDF Suez in Paris, the German player made it to the quarterfinals yet again after a win against Katarina Srebotnik and the tournament’s fifth seed, Aravane Rezai, before being upset by Elena Dementieva in the
quarters.
After this, Petkovic more successful matches took place in tournaments such as Barclay’s Dubai Tennis Championships, Sony Ericsson Open, Internazionali BNL d’Italia and Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open. Although she did not win any of these tournaments, she made
it past the second round in all of them.
Her next great tournament was the UNICEF Open, where she was 7th seed. She defeated players such as Ana Ivanovic in the second round, Sandra Zahlavova in the quarter finals and Kirsten Flipkens in the semis, to reach the final against first seed
Justine Henin. Although she lost the tournament, Petkovic won the first set of this match against Henin.
After this, Petkovic had a very successful run at the Istanbul Cup, making it to the semi finals of the tournament. She defeated Pemra Ozgen in the first round, Ekaterina Makarova in the second, and Britain’s Number 1 Elana Baltacha in the quarterfinals.
She lost to Elena Vesnina in the semi finals; however, the match ran for three sets. One of these sets went to Petkovic 0-6 against Vesnina.
Andrea Petkovic’s best performance at a Grand Slam so far was undoubtedly her streak at the 2010 US Open tournament. In the first two rounds, she scored three-set victories against Nadia Petrova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands. After both triumphs, she pleased
the crowd with a memorable dance, making her performance even more noticeable. In the third round, she was awarded a walkover victory due to an injured Peng Shuai. Petkovic made her first Arthur Ashe stadium appearance in the fourth round of the tournament,
where she competed against eventual finalist Vera Zvonareva. Petkovic lost the match in straight sets 1-6 2-6.
The young German’s latest tournament is the Toray Pan Pacific Open, where she has so far competed in two rounds. Petkovic defeated both Gisela Dulko and 10th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova in straight sets. Her next opponent will most probably be Agnieszka
Radwańska.
