Andrea Petkovic defeats Sofia Arvidsson in the 2nd round – Western & Southern Open 2011
23-year-old Andrea Petkovic defeated 27-year-old Sofia Arvidsson in two consecutive sets of 6-2, 6-4 in simply 72 minutes of play, to secure a berth in the third round of the Western and Southern Open 2011. The two were contesting for the second time on hard courts of Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio and were familiar with each other’s style and performance.
Opening the first set was Petkovic, with a geometric precision neither of the players struck a double fault, however, Arvidsson had aced twice.
Petkovic pawned most of her service games as she had accomplished to get 70% of her first serve on target and had a grand 74% win of total service points, against her rival, who was unable to play her serve and displayed a poor performance in her return, attaining only 6 out of 23 points, making it a pitiable 26% of her total return points.
The Swede (Arvidsson) had an average service game and was able to bag only 50% of her total service points, when compared to Petrova who was able to answer her rival’s shots with well placed drop shots and volleys that landed her an average 50% of her total return points. Petkovic had an excellent serve as she did not setup a single break point opportunity for her opponent to break her in the entire set and gained the edge by breaking her opponent twice.
The Swede was put to shame when she could only muster 17 out of 45 points when compared to Petkovic who had almost twice the score (62% win in the total set score).
Following her victory in the first set Petkovic wasn’t to give up the second, however, it wasn’t child’s play and she managed to bag the second in 40 minutes.
Both the players had rallied out one game after another but in the second set, even though Arvidsson had an excellent accuracy and managed to hit 66% of her first serves on target, she was unable to score in her first and second serves because her opponent had a strong return game (she bagged 47% of her total return points), hence, she lost most of her points and in the end attained a 53% in her total service points.
The German succeeded in attaining a commendable 62% win in total service points against the 27-year-old who was unable to make good return and lost miserably with a 38% win in her total return points. The 23-year-old accomplished the set by restricting her opponent to only 4 games and was also able to equalize in the head-to-head score.
Petkovic showed a lot of confidence and pocketed the marathon service game to give Arvidsson and the crowd something to work on in the match.
