Andrea Petkovic downs Barbora Strycova to reach the quarters – Brisbane WTA 2012
Second seed, Andrea Petkovic, blasted past Czech competitor, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, with a bagel at the Brisbane International 2012, a WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event taking place on the hard courts
in Brisbane, Australia. She displayed exceptional skills to clobber a 7-6(2), 6-0 victory over the 25-year-old Czech to book a final eight spot on Tuesday.
World number 10, Petkovic, lost her serve once but broke Strycova’s serve four times to crush her in an hour and 47 minutes long marathon in their second meeting. She not only avenged her loss at the Indian Wells last year
but also levelled the head-to-head series by 1-1 against the Czech.
The 24-year-old German stepped on the Australian courts with conviction and held her serve in the opening game with style. She continued plucking her serves until she got a vital break in the eighth game and extended her
lead by 5-3. However, Petkovic lost her serve in the very next game and eventually dragged the set to a tie-breaker. She prevailed in the decider and got the spotlight by earning a 7-6(2) success. The German formulated a better first serve share registered
an impressive 65 percent win on it.
The second seed unleashed her series of forays in the following set and drew the first blood in the opening game. She maintained consistency and swiped in one after another game to eventually earn a bagel. The German again
manifested a higher first serve share and jolted down a spectacular 85 percent win on it.
Petkovic brushed off two out of three breakpoints she came across and capitalised on four out of eleven break chances. She also committed fewer unforced errors and only two double faults, which made the difference in the
end.
Next up for the German seed is the winner of the match between the seventh seed, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Estonian Kaia Kanepi.
Third seeded Italian, Francesca Schiavone, will join Petkovic in the last eight. She eased through Kazakh Galina Voskoboeva in straight sets to reach this spot. The Italian number one lost her serve once and broke Voskoboeva’s
serve three times to seal the deal with a 6-4, 6-4 victory in almost one and half hour.
