Andrea Petkovic finally showing some class at Luxembourg Open – Tennis News
Former top-tenner, Andrea Petkovic, has been really struggling to get back her vintage form on her return to the professional tennis circuit this season. The German tennis ace has been sidelined from the tennis courts due to a
series of injuries but eventually made her long-awaited return a couple of months back. However, she hasn’t been able to put up a solid performance in any of the tournaments she took part in and has been badly struggling to create some impact on the WTA Tour.
The 25-year-old German took off the current season as the world number 10 and featured the quarter-final round of the circuit-opening Brisbane International tournament. She then lost in the second round of Apia International Sydney
due to injury and had to stay out of action for about two months. Petkovic made her return at the clay courts of Stuttgart but had to suffer even agonizing ankle injury in the second round battle against Victoria Azarenka.
Petkovic made her second coming to the WTA Tour in August and registered a hard-fought victory in the opening round of New Haven Open, before falling to Dominika Cibulkova, in the second round. Her first round victory didn’t prove
much welcoming for her form and she had to suffer a series of initial round defeats in the tournaments to follow. She lost in the opening rounds of the US Open Championships, in Tokyo and then in Beijing as well, before suffering a downfall in the second round
at Linz. It seemed to many critics that Petkovic has lost her touch and won’t get back into her form any time soon.
The former German number one proved all her critics wrong with her sublime run at Luxembourg Open and beat all the odds to reach the semi-final draw. She had some trouble in hunting down Garbine Muguruza in a three-setter opening
battle of the tournament before registering a huge upset in the second round. She outclassed the former world number one, Jelena Jankovic, 7-5, 6-0, and carried on with her winning impetus in the quarter-finals to dump the unseeded Kazakh, Ksenia Pervak, in
straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
Petkovic couldn’t continue her dream run in the round of four against the other former world number one contender, Venus Williams. She bagged the opening set after a tough contest but dropped the following two at, 7-5, 4-6, 4-6,
to finish her voyage at Luxembourg Open. However, her performances with the racket at this particular venue proved far too satisfying for her fans. It appears that things have finally started to go her way and she might come up with some more stunning performances
in the next season to break back in the Top-10 WTA Premier Rankings.
