Andrea Petkovic shakes off Nadia Petrova in quarterfinal – Western & Southern Open 2011
Launching the quarter-final round of the Cincinnati Open 2011, Nadia Petrova, Russia, played against Andrea Petkovic of Germany at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, Ohio, USA. The two battled out for 90 minutes before the German
came up stronger winning the match 7-5, 6-1.
Starting off on Friday, 19th August, the Premier 5 event entered its final stages as Petkovic chaired the semi-final winning over the Russian world No.27.
Petkovic, ranked world No.11, has been on a crucial run as she has made it to the semis and quarter-final of several tournaments, however, failed to win any lately. The only title she won this year was the Internationaux de Strasbourg
where Marion Bartoli retired to give away the final. Nevertheless, the top ranker made her worthy spot this time.
Aged 29, the Russian felt a hard beating losing her way in the Cincinnati Open even though the former world No.3 played to her best. Considered as the hard court specialist, Petrova had a hard time accepting the loss, however,
was appreciated by her fans for her excellent play.
Serving to open the first set of the match, Petkovic won on her serve and switched the serve. Levelling the scores in the following set, Petrova blew the Russian world No.11 breaking her in game 3 to lead 2-1.  Extending her lead
further on, the German stood comfortable with a 3-1 lead after game 4.
However, the tables turned as Petkovic cut the lead in game 5 and equalled the scores at 3-3 after game 6. The two went on neck-to-neck levelling at 4-4 and then on 5-5 as well with Petkovic to serve next.  Winning on her serve
6-5, the Russian broke the world No.27 in game 12 taking away the set 7-5 unexpectedly.
Dominating in set 1, Petkovic went splendid in set 2. Serving first, the 23-year-old won back-to-back games blistering the 29-year-old and leaving her restless and frustrated. The strong fore-hander, Petkovic broke the Russian
former world No.3 in game 2 and 4 and further on winning game 5 as well to lead 5-0.
Petkovic went on clearing game 7 as well and winning the second set 6-1. The startling performance left the Russian devastated.
Winning in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, the German moved on to the semi-final of the Cincinnati Open to play Jelena Jankovic, ranked world No.14, to battle it out for a spot in the title match.
