Andrea Petkovic shocks Jelena Jankovic to enter quarters – BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open 2012
German star, Andrea Petkovic, devastated third seed Jelena Jankovic with a bagel at the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open 2012 on Thursday. She jolted down a 7-5, 6-0 victory against the former world number one to power into the final eight at this WTA (Women’s
Tennis Association) International-level tournament held in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg.
The former Top 10 star recreated her magic to outclass Jankovic in their fifth outing. After recording the victory in one hour and 35 minutes, Petkovic not only avenged her loss at the China Open few weeks ago but also took lead in the head-to-head series
against the Serbian star.
Petkovic wiped out the last eight games consecutively before stealing the show. She moved up a gear after saving breakpoints in the ninth game. The German reflected in an on-court interview:
"The first set was the key moment. It was always going to be a turning point because it was such an intense first set. We were pushing each other so hard and afterwards Jelena's level dropped just a little bit and I managed to capitalise."
The 25-year-old made a sloppy entry at this indoor hard court event. She suffered the first blow in the opening game to trail at 0-1. Despite reeling off following three games with two breaks of serve, the German squandered her edge in the fifth game and
eventually levelled the scores at 3-3. After brushing off breakpoints in the ninth game, Petkovic found her rhythm. She cashed another break opportunity in the last game and clicked the opener with a 7-5 success.
Currently ranked 182nd in the WTA Premier Rankings, Petkovic went out of control in the following set. She stroke out all six games and clinched the set with a bagel. The German was never challenged with any breakpoint and converted three out
of four break chances to her advantage.
Up next for the Tuzla, Bosnia native is the Kazakhstani contender, Ksenia Pervak, who stunned sixth seeded Sorana Cirstea with a breadstick to reach this place.
The German commented about her next match-up:
"I lost to Ksenia at Wimbledon in 2011. She played a great match - I played a terrible match - but she didn't make it easy to play my best tennis. I'm very excited to play her again and try and make a few things work a little better this time."
Pervak was broken once but capitalised on three out of four break chances to formulate a 7-6(4), 6-1 score line.
