Andrea Petkovic upsets Petra Kvitova; eases into quarterfinal – Rogers Cup 2011
World number 10, Andrea Petkovic upset world number 7, Petra Kvitova in a bread stick (6-1) and 6-2 victory in the third round of the 2011 Rogers Cup at the Rexall Centre in York University, Toronto Canada.
The two players are old-fangled rivals and had contested against each other once in 2009, thrice in 2010 and once during this year before their meeting here. The last time they met was earlier this year during the final round of
the Brisbane event, where Kvitova was the winner as she led the head-to-head score to 3-2. However, this time around Petkovic managed to level the score at three wins each.
Meeting for the sixth time, Petkovic won the toss and opened the set by smashing an ace and one more ace during the set, even though, she struck 2 net ball and lost points, she managed to win 71% in her first serve and 50% in the
second serve and therefore, had an overall score of 65% in her total service points.
On the other hand, Kvitova had 79% of her first serve hits on target but because of a poor second serve, she lost points and was only able to achieve an average 48% of her total service points, along with, a relatively poorer return
which, enabled her to win only 35% of her total return points in the opening set.
Petkovic won the set by not only saving a 100% of her break points but also broke her opponent twice, whereas, the Czech (Kvitova) was unable to do so. Hence, restricting her opponent to a single game and smashing 5 aces during
the set, the German (Petkovic) won the set with a 6-1 victory.
In order to completely crush her Czech opponent, Petkovic had to take the lead and serve the set to her opponent. This time Petkovic struck an ace and a line fault, whereas, Kvitova had struck only a net ball and lost a point.
With a sturdy German defence the 23-year-old Petkovic saved a hundred percent of her break points and converted 2 out of the 4 break points to her advantage, while, the Czech was only able to save 50% of her break points.
The 23-year-old despite her age had an excellent forehand, which aided her to achieve an exceptional 68% win in her total service points, along with, an above average 48% win in her return. Whereas, the 21-year-old had a failing
serve and had appalling returns that attained her 52% win in her total service points of the set and 32% win in her total return points.
Andrea Petkovic won the set by accomplishing 58% of her totals set points which were 9 points more than her opponent’s who barely managed a 42% win in her total set points.
In just 73 minutes of play, the German, world number 10 easily outfoxed the world number 4 Kvitova to secure a place in the quarterfinal of the Roger Cup 2011.
