Andrea Petkovic withdraws from Toray Pan Pacific Open – Tennis News
World number eleven Andrea Petkovic of Germany announced today that she was going to withdraw from the 2011 Toray Pan Pacific Open on account of a knee injury.
A Premier 5 event held at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan, the Toray Pan Pacific Open is scheduled from 25th September to 1st October showcasing some of the biggest names of WTA including world number
one and defending champion Caroline Wozniacki, Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, former world number one Maria Sharapova and her compatriot Vera Zvonareva.
Petkovic was scheduled to appear at the event as the ninth seed; however, following a knee injury the German has regrettably announced her withdrawal from the event. Tweeting on the popular social networking site, Twitter.com,
the German wrote, “Unfortunately I have to withdraw from Tokyo, guys. I wanted to play so badly but my knee really needs all the attention it can get right now.”
The German apologised to her fans and hoped to return to the tour in the week after Tokyo appearing at Beijing. Her second tweet said, “I overstressed it in the last weeks and now it needs all my love. I am really sorry but I hope
to be back in Beijing if Petkorazzi allows.” She further wished for the support and prayers from her fans, saying, “Yo, Petkorazzis. Don't forget to send some mad mental looove and kisses to the Petko-Knee! Thanksss :) “
Debuting here two years back, Petkovic holds two round-of-sixteen appearances here. Last year she exited the event after losing to Pole Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets. Having improved her performance in 2011, Petkovic put
in three career best quarterfinal appearances at the Grand Slam Down Under, at Roland Garros and at Flushing Meadows. Phenomenal at the 2011 US Open, Petkovic as the tenth seed made her way into the quarterfinals suffering only a single set loss in the process
against Chinese Jie Zheng. Unfortunately, Petkovic fell in the round of eight against Wozniacki after putting up almost impenetrable resistance.
Although Petkovic will be missed at the Tokyo event, her fans hope to see her and her crazy dance moves on the court soon as they wish her a speedy recovery for the Beijing event.
