Andrea Petkovic’s return to the WTA Tour didn’t last long – Tennis News
Former top-tenner, Andrea Petkovic of Germany, finally made her long-awaited comeback to the professional circuit but couldn’t get any hint of her vintage form. She suffered a cracking straight sets defeat, 2-6, 5-7, at the hands
of the Swiss underdog, Romina Oprandi, in the opening round of the US Open Championships on Day 1.
The 24-year-old German diva has been the number one contestant from her country before she had a terrible right knee injury to fall out of the WTA Tour. Her return to the clay court season this year was greeted by another agonizing
ankle injury, again sidelining her from the professional circuit.
Petkovic finally returned to the tennis courts at New Haven Open and had a real rough ride before taking down the Hungarian underdog, Timea Babos, in the opening round. She has to suffer a humiliating 4-6, 1-6, defeat at the hands
of the Slovakian number one, Dominika Cibulkova, in the very next match but she was very confident to perform well at the last Grand Slam event of the season, the US Open Championships.
Falling to number 37 since her injury, the German tennis ace had a shocking start to her Grand Slam campaign at the Flushing Meadows. She didn’t such an all-round onslaught from the world number 56 opponent in her very first match
of the tournament and had no option but to submit to her brilliance. Petkovic appeared extremely rusty throughout the contest and couldn’t deliver a decent performance in the opening set of the match. She tried to force her way back in the second set but it
appeared all too late for the German to regroup. By the time she looked to have her eye set in the contest, Oprandi had wrapped up victory for her.
Petkovic’s return to the WTA Tour was anticipated with a major breakthrough from the world class performer but it proved to be sheer disappointment for the German fans. She didn’t look anyway near to a former top-10 player and
was brutally manhandled by an inferior ranked opponent. Perhaps she should have waited a bit more to get fully fit and then re-enter the professional circuit.
