Andrea Taylor and Katy Freeman triumph Women’s finals in the 2011 Speedo Grand Challenge
Andrea Taylor and Katy Freeman have secured gold medals in the Women’s finals on the last day of the 2011 Speedo Grand Challenge, held at the William Woollett Aquatic Center, on Sunday, May 29.
The session concluded after the final rounds of the Women’s 800m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 100m back-stroke, 200m breast-stroke and the 100m freestyle.
The first event of the session was the 800m freestyle final, where the arena’s favourite, Andrea Taylor sustained her fastest qualification spot and won the gold medal in 8:40.81 minutes. The 19-year-old Taylor had a considerable lead of almost 11 seconds
from Nicole Chang, who followed her on the podium for the silver medal, with timing of 8:51.55 minutes. Chang stayed almost three seconds away from her closest rival, Dawn Heckman, who stepped on the podium for the bronze medal in a time of 8:54.04 minutes.
The next event was the 200m breast-stroke, where SBAC-CA’s Katy Freeman demonstrated her astounding swimming skills by earning the gold medal in 2:28.06 minutes. Katy, who qualified as the fastest swimmer into the finals, improved her swim by almost three
seconds to overwhelm Elizabeth Smith of UN-PC, who pocketed the silver medal in 2:30.69 minutes. They were followed by Jasmine Tosky of PASA-PC, who stayed almost two seconds away from Smith and captured the bronze medal, clocking 2:32.55 minutes.
Moments later, UN-PC’s Julia Smit sustained her qualification spot by grabbing the gold medal in an improved time of 1:02.32 minutes. Smit improved her timing by 0.52 seconds to earn the golden spot from the second fastest qualifying swimmer, Elizabeth Webb,
who touched the wall in 1:03.22 minutes for the silver medal. Webb’s team-member, Madeline Dirado followed her on the podium for the bronze medal, producing a time of 1:03.61 minutes.
In the 200m butterfly, Jasmine Tosky presented a remarkable swim in front of the arena, by touching the wall first in 2:09.37 minutes for the gold medal. She was followed by Katerine Savard, who defeated the second fastest qualifier, Andrea Taylor, by posting
a time of 2:12.12 minutes. Taylor settled on the podium for the bronze medal, for completing her swim in 2:13.31 minutes.
The 100m freestyle gold medal was captured by Jessica Hardy, who overpowered the top qualifying swimmer, Julia Smit, by touching the wall in a time of 54.67 seconds. Smit and Jasmine Tosky followed Hardy on the podium for the silver and bronze medals, posting
55.11 and 55.94 seconds, respectively.
The arena enjoyed the fantastic display of these swimmers, while the winners were awarded awards and accolades for achieving podium finishes.
