Andreas Beck, Steve Darcis cruise into the quarterfinals – BNP Paribas Polish Open 2011 CH
Andreas Beck defeats Jesse Huta Galung 6-4, 6-0
German Andreas Beck, ranked 140th in the world, breezed past eighth seed Jesse Huta Galung of the Netherlands in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 in the second round at the BNP Paribas Polish Open in Sopot, Poland on Thursday.
The German took one hour and nine minutes to oust his opponent.
Beck broke the Dutch in the fifth game of the opening set to take a 3-2 lead. However, Huta Galung broke back in the very next game to level the score at 3-3. The German broke again in the ninth game and capitalised on it to win
the set 6-4. The 25-year-old delivered 63 percent of the first serves and two aces in the first set. Beck won two of the four break points he received on Huta Galung’s serve and saved two of the three break points on his own serve in the opening set.
The German crushed his opponent in the second set as he did not allow Huta Galung to claim even a single game, winning six successive games and breaking the Dutch three times to bag the set 6-0.
Beck is drawn to meet Serbian Nikola Ciric, ranked 177th in the world, in the last eight.
Steve Darcis beats Marcin Gawron 6-3, 6-1
Fifth seed Steve Darcis of Belgium cruised past world number 272 Marcin Gawron in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 into the quarterfinals. The match lasted for just 57 minutes.
Darcis started the match strongly as he broke Gawron in the third game and consolidated on it to build a 3-1 lead. The Belgian broke again in the ninth game, grabbing the set 6-3. The right-handed fired 71 percent of the first
serves and a couple of aces in the first set. Darcis saved the two break points he faced on his own serve and won two of the three break points he received in the opening set.
The Belgian was almost flawless in the second set, breaking Gawron twice and drooping just one game to seal the set 6-1. Darcis served very well as he smacked five aces and 57 percent of the first serves in the second set. In comparison,
Gawron did not hit any ace and delivered a meagre 38 percent of the first serves. The Polish converted just three of the seventeen first returns into points in the second set.
Darcis is slated to take on world number 166 Jan Hajek of Czech Republic in the quarterfinals. The Czech beat world number 102 Flavio Cipolla of Italy in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16.
