Andreas Beck defeats Jerzy Janowicz to enter quarterfinals – Eckental Challenger 2011
The second round men’s singles competition continued on November 3, 2011 at the 2011 Eckental Challenger. Jerzy Janowicz (Poland) faced Andreas Beck (Germany) with their quarterfinals entry at stake.
Both players are having a great run in the tournament with impressive victories over their opponents. In this match, however, it was the local Andreas Beck who won the match 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(7).
During the first set, the 25-year old Beck was proving to be a worthy opponent against the 20-year old Polish player. Beck scored four aces in reply to Janowicz’s five and conceded a double fault. The German has a lower first serve
winning ratio with 57% as compared to the 71% maintained by his opponent.
In terms of points won on first serve, Beck was near flawless, as he scored 94% points in his service games on first serve. He also saved the only breakpoint, which he conceded during the set. Janowicz, on the other hand, could
win only 75% points on his first serves, an indication that his service games were not as successful as Beck’s.
The Polish player was also unsuccessful in saving all of his breakpoints. He could only save one out of his two.
When the second set started, the Polish stated his attack, not giving any room to the German to begin his counter attack. The German, who, the spectators thought, was winning the match in the first set, was now fighting to survive
in the second.
This time, it was Janowicz winning 80% points on first serve as compared to the 50% points won by Beck. The Polish also saved his breakpoint, not giving any opportunity to Beck in taking a lead. Janowicz kept the German play on
the defensive throughout the second set as he won the second set 6-2.
With the entry into the quarterfinals on the line, the match entered into a third set with both players eager to make their place in the next round of the tournament. The Polish tried to enforce his dominance and lead in the set
by scoring six aces. He was playing his service games well, as he did not concede any double fault.
Beck, on the other hand, delivered only three points but did concede six double faults. He was not willing to lose the match and therefore, had to take chances with this service games.
The German also had a lower first serve winning ratio but he did manage to win higher points on his first serves. The third set entered into a tiebreaker, which was a chance for both the players to take a win.
It was the German who succeeded by winning the third set 7-6(7). He took the win and entered into the quarterfinals. His morale would be high, as he would get support by his home ground in the quarterfinals.
