Andreas Beck defeats Josh Goodall in first round – AEGON Pro-Series Loughborough 2011 CH
The 2011 AEGON Pro-Series in Loughborough, Great Britain continued on November 9, 2011 with a first round men’s single match between Andreas Beck (Germany) and Josh Goodall (Great Britain). The 26-year old local player Goodall could not make an impact on home soil as Beck won the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
25-year old Beck was not aggressive in the first set of the match. He could not deliver any ace, which could be because of his cautious service games. He did concede two double faults. On the other hand, Goodall scored three aces and looked to clinch the set with his dominant run. The world number 293rd, Goodall, won three games in the set but that was all he could win in the opening set.
Beck was going slowly but safely towards winning the first set. He had a 68% first serve winning ratio as compared to Goodall’s 58%. Beck did not score any ace but he played his service games well against the British opponent. Beck scored 89% points from his first serve while Goodall could only score 77% points.
The ratio was also higher when it came to winning points on second serve as Beck won 58% points from his second serve while Goodall could win 40%. The British did created some advantage over the German with his three aces but it was Beck, who was consistent in his first set serves and reply shots. He was also successful in saving all three of his breakpoints, which compensated for his service games without aces.
Goodall could only save three of his four breakpoints, which only meant his defence was not effective against the German. Beck won the first set 6-3.
In the second set, Beck was again unsuccessful in scoring points with aces as he could deliver only one. He was not giving away any error points to the British, as he did not concede any double faults. Goodall did score three aces in the second set but his two double faults again placed him behind the German in the set.
As the second set progressed, Beck retained his dominant lead just the way he had maintained it in the first set. Beck had a 75% first serve winning ratio while Goodall had a 60% rate. In terms of winning points on first serve, both players were nearly equal as Beck won 76% and Goodall won 72%.
Beck was ahead in terms of winning points on second serve as he won 71% points and Goodall could only manage to win 50%. The German was again successful in winning both of his breakpoints while Goodall was unable to defend his serves as he could only save two out of his three breakpoints.
The British was closing in to clinch the second set but he could not win more than four games as Beck won the second set 6-4. The German has now entered into the second round of the 2011 AEGON Pro-Series in Loughborough.
