Andreas Beck sails past Jan Hernych into semi-final – Eckental Challenger 2011
The 2011 Eckental Challenger featured its quarterfinal match for the men’s single competition on November 4, 2011. Jan Hernych (Czech Republic) played his match against Andreas Beck (Germany). Beck gave the spectators something
to cheer about when he won the match 7-6(4), 6-4.
As the first set started, both players were going on with an equal pace. Hernych scored two aces with two double faults while Beck was dominant with four aces but conceded only a single double fault.
The 32-year old Hernych had a 66% first serve winning ratio, which was nearly equal to Beck’s 64%. The Czech player won 71% points on first serve while the German scored 67% points.
Both players were able to save one breakpoint out of the two they faced. Hernych, the 218th ranked player, who won his previous match at the 2011 Eckental Challenger against Grega Zemlja (Slovenia), was not going back
on the back foot in the first set.
Beck was in the hunt to maintain a lead with his consistent pace with his serves but the Czech player was also evenly consistent. That is why the first set entered into a tiebreaker, as both players were not providing any room
to win the set.
Hernych was trying his best to clinch the first set but Beck was again using his serves to sustain his lead, hence winning the first set 7-6(4).
With the second set in progress, Hernych delivered four aces but his aggressive play also forced him to concede double faults twice in the set. Beck, on the other hand, could only score two aces but he was showing a mature stance,
as he did not concede any double fault.
The 25-year old German had a first serve winning ratio of 68%. He won 82% points from his first serve and maintained a steady flow with his service games as he won 88% points with his second serves.
Hernych, on the other hand, could only win 67% points from his first serve and reduced his performance with serves as he only managed to win 58% points on his second serve.
His downward trend with serves was because Beck’s counter attack in the second set was a psychological advantage over Hernych. The German won the first set and he wanted to win the second set at the earliest, as he knew a few mistakes
would let the Czech close in the lead and take the second set into a tiebreaker.
Beck was again on the spot when it came to saving breakpoints. He saved the only breakpoint he faced. The Czech could not break any of Beck’s serves, which was another factor that led Beck to retain his lead in the match. The German
won the second set 6-4 and won the quarterfinals of the 2011 Eckental Challengers.
