Andreas Beck outclassed Vasek Pospisil in the opening round clash – Chennai Open 2012
On January 3, 2012, the 2012 Chennai Open continued with the first round matches of the men’s singles competition, with the 25-year-old German, Andreas Beck, outplaying the Canadian Vasek Pospisil in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(8).
Beck maintained a dominating lead with his service games throughout the matchup. Although Pospisil scored 15 aces in the match (with Beck scoring none), the German sustained a lead in the match with his shot selections. His forehands
were effective against the Canadian, giving him valuable points on regularity. The match witnessed both players marching forward in breaking each other’s serves and Pospisil was able to break Beck’s serve once, while Beck broke Canadian’s serves on three occasions
in the match.
Both players were aiming to enter into the second round of the tournament to remain alive in the race for the title victory. The Canadian, ranked at the 119th place in the world, was doing his best to keep a lead but
was unable to take any leverage as he got static after winning three games while Beck moved on to win six games in the opening set. Beck won the first set 6-3, giving the 98th ranked German a huge confidence boost to enter into the second set.
With the second set in progress, it was interesting to note that Beck was on the defensive, avoiding aggressive shots and making risky moves. He was delivered decent service games and did not appear hasty with his return shots,
playing controlled strokes. Pospisil was showed his skills with nice backhand shots, which kept him at par with his opponent. Pospisil could not give a good game in the first set, but in the second, he made a great comeback. The Canadian was desperate to score
a win and banged 12 aces, with Beck delivering none.
Pospisil’s offensive stance on the court took the second set into a tie-breaker but Beck’s cool headed shots and calculated reply also granted him the win in the second set. Beck won the match 6-3, 7-6(8) and made his way into
the second round of the Chennai Open. This was the first time when Pospisil and Beck met on the tennis court and the German registered victory with his tennis insights and temperament. The German now leads 1-0 in the head-to-head series against Pospisil and
cruised into the second round where he will face Belgium’s David Goffin.
