Andreas Haider-Maurer beats Peter Gojowczyk in second round – Loughborough Challenger 2011
The second round men’s single competition continued on November 10, 2011 at the 2011 AEGON Loughborough Challenger. Andreas Haider-Maurer (Austria) played the match against Peter Gojowczyk (Germany). The Austrian won the match
7-6(5), 2-6, 7-6(7).
World number 127th, Maurer, scored thirteen aces against Gojowczyk. The German was also aggressive with his shots as he scored ten aces. During the match, their double faults were also on the higher side as Gojowczyk
conceded double faults six times while Maurer did them five times.
In the first set, the two players were going at the same pace. Maurer scored five aces while Gojowczyk could deliver three. The Austrian conceded double faults twice in the first set while his opponent conceded it once. Their first
serve winning ratios were also similar as Maurer had a 51% winning rate while Gojowczyk had a 62% ratio.
The two players were equal in their service games. Maurer won 75% points from his first serve while Gojowczyk won 72%. In their second serves, Maurer won 35% points while Gojowczyk won 33%. Their service games were not too aggressive
or too defensive.
They were moving on in the first set with a decent pace. It seemed neither one of them are in a hurry to win the set. Gojowczyk could win five out of the seven breakpoints he faced while Maurer could win only one out of three.
Their similar kind of stance on the court took the first set into a tiebreaker. Here, Gojowczyk could not take a lead as Maurer won the first set 7-6(5).
As the second set began, it noticed that both players were nearly equal to each other in terms of statistics. Maurer scored with three aces while Gojowczyk delivered two of them. Their double faults were also similar as Gojowczyk
conceded a double fault once while Maurer had two of them.
Although their first serve winning ratios were not that different, as Maurer had a 63% winning ratio as compared to Gojowczyk’s 70%, it was the German who created a lead in the second set.
Maurer won 50% points from his first serve and Gojowczyk won 57% points. In the second serve, Maurer’s success rate decreased as he could only win 14% points while Gojowczyk retained his success rate and won 56% points from his
second serve.
The pair was unable to save all of their breakpoints in the second set. Maurer could only save one out of his four breakpoints while Gojowczyk saved two out of his three. Gojowczyk won the second set 6-2 and equalized the match
to two sets each.
As the match entered the third set to determine the winner, both players scored five aces each, which showed they wanted to gain a lead in the set. Gojowczyk conceded four double faults, which was an indication that he was getting
desperate to take the lead.
Again, in the third set, both players were giving their best to win the match as the set entered into another tiebreaker. But this time it was Maurer who won the third set and entered the quarterfinals of the tournament.
