Andreas Haider-Maurer dumps Damir Dzumhur in round one – Banja Luka 2012 CH
Seventh seed, Andreas Haider-Maurer, tumbled the local challenger, Damir Dzumhur, in straight sets at the Banja Luka Challenger 2012 on Tuesday. He joggled up a 6-3, 6-2 victory against the world number 219 to power into the second round at this outdoor
clay court event held in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The seeded Austrian showed his class to overpower Dzumhur in front of a pessimist crowd. Fighting each other for the first time, Haider-Maurer comfortably advanced into the round of 16 at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event.
The 25-year-old stepped into the Bosnian courts in high spirits. Haider-Maurer smashed angled shots to keep his serves until he drew the first blood in the sixth game. The Austrian swiped his remaining serves with self-assurance and ultimately clicked the
opener with a 6-3 success. He brushed off both breakpoints he faced and capitalised on one out of two break opportunities to inch towards the glory.
Ranked 118th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Haider-Maurer lifted his game in the proceeding set. He broke the Bosnian’s serve twice and leaped to a 5-1 lead. The Austrian kept his serve once again and pulled out the victory
with a 6-2 score line. He was never challenged with any barriers and converted two out of seven break chances to his advantage.
Summing up the seed’s performance, Haider-Maurer spilled more double faults and clobbered a lower first serve share of 68 per cent as opposed to Dzumhur’s 72 per cent. However, he brilliantly marked 30 out of 36 points on it and smacked five aces to prevail.
Next up for Haider-Maurer is another local contestant, Tomislav Brkic. The wild card recipient hit back to triumph over the Slovakian contender, Kamil Capkovic, in a three-set thriller to reach this spot. He was broken twice but cashed in three out of nine
break chances to formulate a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 score line. Brkic struck 11 aces and coughed fewer double faults to dominate. He produced a lower first serve share of 52 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 62 per cent but availed 39 out of 44 points on it to steal
the spotlight.
