Andreas Petkovic downs Alexa Glatch in the 2nd round – Mercury Open 2011
Tuesday the 2nd of August, 2011 was the start of the second round of the Mercury Open 2011. The German, Andreas Petkovic was competing against the American Alexa Glatch. The world number 11 (Petkovic) won the match in
straight two sets 6-3, 6-4 at the La Costa Resort and Spa, Carlsbad, California.
Petkovic won the pitch and with great enthusiasm and confidence served first; she smashed 3 aces and with lack of precession struck 2 line faults. Although she had an exceptional first serve percentage opening the set (which was
80%), her return serve was like a trampoline that bounced back all her opponents shots and achieved a mediocre 46% in her total return points.
Additionally, her defence was also strong and she was able to save both her break points along with breaking her opponent once. Due to Petkovi’s consistency, technique and skill she was able to win the set with almost twice as
many points as her opponents.
On the contrary, Glatch struck two double faults hitting the net and had no consistency in her serve and return serve; hence she was only able to win three game points from Petkovick. In addition, she lost her points also because
she was only capable of saving two break points and her adversary had not allowed a chance to break her (Petkovic)
After being beaten blue and black, Glatch had learnt her lesson but it was too late in the match and she eventually lost the second set as well. She had improved her accuracy and struck zero double faults. She was able to bag a
50% of her total serve points along with a mediocre return she clenched an average 43% of her total return points.
Additionally, she had improved her defence and managed to save 50% of her break points along with, winning 67% of her break points.
Mean while, Petkovic had an exceptional serve pounding at her opponent, she was able to win 57% of her total serve points along with an average return of 50% in the total return points. Even though her defence was faltering she
still managed to win 50% of her break points along with saving only one break point.
Summing it up; in the second set Glatch had tried to pick a notch higher however, that back fired and she was unable to win the set. Petkovic on the other hand, had won the match because of a strong consistency.
Born on the 9th of September 1987, the 23-year-old has 397 of total matches throughout her professional career out of which 249 she has won while the remaining she lost.
