Andreas Seppi downs Donald Young in the second round – AEGON International 2011
Andreas Seppi of Italy outplayed the American qualifier, Donald Young in the second round of AEGON International, being played at the Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club in Eastbourne, United Kingdom, on Wednesday.
The Italian settled the final score at 7-6(1), 6-3, taking just one hour and twelve minutes of play to qualify for the quarter-final round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 tournament.
It was the first time these two men faced each other one-on-one and Seppi didn’t take much time to get his eye in the game. After winning a hard-fought opening set, the Italian faced limited resistance from his opponent in the
second and registered a comprehensive victory to get into the final eight players in the tournament.
21-year-old Young was magnificent with his serve accuracy, delivering 82 per cent of it on target and bagged 31 out of 42 first serve points on it, yet finishing on the losing side in the end. The Italian competitor replied his
opponent’s brilliant serve by firing eight thudding aces and delivering serve with 69 per cent precision.
Seppi fully made use of the two break opportunities he received in the match and converted both of them to take down Young. The American had four chances to break the opponent’s serve but could cash in just one opportunity to let
Seppi clinch victory.
The American contestant hung in throughout the opening set and held serve on all of his games to keep the score board ticking on even terms. Both players exchanged assertive winners but failed to crack in a serve break, taking
the score to 6-6, pushing the opener into a decisive tie breaker round.
Young seemed to have lost his focus in the tie breaker round, as he committed a series of unforced errors, spraying errant strokes all over the court. The American only secured one point before Seppi reeled of seven straight points
to seal the first set at 7-6(1).
The following set took off with aggression and both contestants struck one serve break each to level the scores to 2-2. The Italian then shifted his gears to gather some pace, stinging his second serve break of the match and raced
to 5-3, serving for the match. Seppi had no trouble in serving out of the contest and marked an end to Young’s voyage at AEGON International by wrapping up the second set at 6-3.
Seppi will take on either Olivier Rochus of Germany or the Argentine competitor, Carlos Berlocq in the quarter-final clash of the tournament.
