Andreas Seppi trounces Facundo Arguello to enter quarters – AON Open 2012 CH
Top seeded local star, Andreas Seppi, got the better of the Argentinean challenger, Facundo Arguello, in straight sets at the AON Open 2012 on Thursday. He penned down a 6-2, 6-3 victory against the world number 220 to charge into the final eight at this outdoor clay court tournament taking place in Genoa, Italy.
The highest ranked star at this event, Seppi needed one hour and 22 minutes to overpower Arguello in their first encounter. After earning this fame, the Italian assertively secured a spot in the quarter-finals at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event which is held from 3rd to 9th September.
Seppi thundered into the Italian courts and broke the Argentinean’s opening serve to jump to a 3-0 lead. He held his remaining serves with conviction and capitalised on another break chance in the last game, eventually clicking the opener with a 6-2 win. He was never challenged with any breakpoint and availed two out of seven break chances to inch towards the limelight.
Ranked 27th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Seppi carried his winning ways in the following set. He broke Arguello’s opening serve again and leaped to a 3-0 lead. The Italian swiped his remaining serves after brushing off both breakpoints he came across and clinched the set with a 6-3 score line.
On the whole, Seppi fired eight aces and spilled fewer double faults. He also produced a better first serve share of 53 per cent in contrast with his opponent’s 49 per cent and impressively marked 24 out of 31 points on it. The Italian sought nine break chances and finished the match with 72 points.
Up next for Seppi is the seventh seed, Albert Montanes from Spain. The seeded Spaniard battled past Italy’s Gianluca Naso in a three-set thriller to set up this battle.
Seppi’s fifth seeded compatriot, Simone Bolelli, also earned the glory later that day. He crushed the Slovakian contender, Pavol Cervenak, with a breadstick to progress. Bolelli bagged his entire serves without facing any trouble and cashed in two out of five break chances to register a 7-6(1), 6-1 success.
